John 3:16: “Is The World Israel Only?”

On January 1, 2015, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

The framework for John 3:16

Genesis 22:18 "All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring (seed), because you have obeyed my voice.”

Galatians 3:13-18
[13] Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” [14] that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Messiah Yahusha'eh; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. [15] Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it. [16] Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, “To descendants”, as of many, but as of one, “To your offspring”, which is Messiah. [17] Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by Aluhiym in Messiah, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect. [18] For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but Aluhiym has granted it to Abraham by promise.

John 4:22 "You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is OUT of the Jews (Yahudim)." The Greek reads "Out of the Jews" while the English translations read "of the Jews or from the Jews."

John 3:16-17
For Aluhiym so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For Aluhiym didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

What is the Greek definition of the word "World?"

world3

The Greek Interlinear translates the word "World" as system:

world4

If we apply a technique called "PLUG-IN" where we replace the term "the world" with "Israel," we will notice something interesting.

John 3:16
For Aluhiym so loved the world (Israel?), that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For Aluhiym didn’t send his Son into the world (Israel?) to judge the world (Israel?), but that the world (Israel?) should be saved through him.

So far, the substitution is okay .... Let us try this same technique with other verses!

John 17:9 "I pray for them. I don’t pray for the world (Israel?), but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours."

John 17:14 "I have given them your word. The world (Israel?) hated them, because they are not of the world (Israel?), even as I am not of the world (Israel?)."

It is obvious that the terminology “The World” must be read within its context.

Based on their analysis of the original Greek parallelistic structure of John 3:14–17, Robert Gundry and Russell Howell provide the following English translation showing the grammatical structure of that passage:[1]

world5

Two keys to the context of John 3:16. #1 The Messiah is talking to Nicodemus about the requirements of entering into the kingdom. #2 John 3:16 states that one must believe in the son of Aluhiym for salvation.

What must a person believe?

Acts 10:34-48
[34] Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I perceive that Aluhiym doesn’t show favoritism; [35] but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him. [36] The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Yahusha' The Messiah—he is Master of all— [37] you yourselves know what happened, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; [38] even Yahusha'of Nazareth, how Aluhiym anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for Aluhiym was with him. [39] We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they also[a] killed, hanging him on a tree. [40] Aluhiym raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed, [41] not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by Aluhiym, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. [42] He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by Aluhiym as the Judge of the living and the dead. [43] All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.”

[44] While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. [45] They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles. [46] For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying Aluhiym.

Then Peter answered, [47] “Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.” [48] He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Yahusha' The Messiah. Then they asked him to stay some days.

The connection between believing, love , and the keeping of the commandments

John 14:1-15
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in Aluhiym. Believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. [3] If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. [4] Where I go, you know, and you know the way.” [5] Thomas said to him, “Master, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way? [6] Yahusha' said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. [7] If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.” [8] Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

[9] Yahusha' said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ [10] Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works. [11] Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake. [12] Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father. [13] Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it. [15] If you love me, keep my commandments.

Continuing the connection ...

1 John 5:1-6
Whoever believes that Yahusha' is the Messiah has been born of Aluhiym. Whoever loves the Father also loves the child who is born of him. [2] By this we know that we love the children of Aluhiym, when we love Aluhiym and keep his commandments. [3] For this is the love of Aluhiym, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. [4] For whatever is born of Aluhiym overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith (belief). [5] Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that is the Son of Aluhiym? [6] This is he who came by water and blood, Yahusha' The Messiah; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

The requirements for entering into life:

Matthew 19:16-17
Behold, one came to him and said, “Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, Aluhiym. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.

Revelations 12:17
The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep Aluhiym’s commandments and hold Yahusha's testimony.

Revelations 22:14
Blessed are those who do his commandments, hat they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

Revelations 22:2
In the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

What did Paul and John know?

Genesis 22:18 "All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring (seed), because you have obeyed my voice.”

Galatians 3:13-16
The Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” [14] that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through The Messiah Yahusha'; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. [15] Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it. [16] Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, “To descendants”, as of many, but as of one, “To your offspring”, which is The Messiah.

John 4:22
You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from [out of] the Jews. (Emphasis added: The Messiah is speaking of himself.)

But wait! There is an order ...

Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the Good News of The Messiah, for it is the power of Aluhiym for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

Matthew 12:18-21
“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased:I will put my Spirit on him. He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not strive, nor shout; neither will anyone hear his voice in the streets. He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a smoking flax,
until he leads justice to victory. In his name, the nations will hope.”

Why is there an order of salvation?

Exodus 4:22
You shall tell Pharaoh, ‘YaH.. יהוה says, Israel is my son, my firstborn,

Amos 3:1-2
3 Hear this word that YaH.. יהוה has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying: “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins.”

Romans 9:3-4
For I could wish that I myself were accursed from The Messiah for my brothers’ sake, my relatives according to the flesh, who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises;

Isaiah 11:12
He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Jeremiah 31:31
31 Behold, the days come, says YaH.. [יהוה], that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Israel was promised to be a nation of priest

Exodus 19:6
and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy [set-apart] nation.

Why a kingdom of priest?

Isaiah 42:6
I, YaH.. [יהוה], have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and make you a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations;

Israel never became a nation of priest because of sin. The Levitical priesthood is a microcosm of the duties originally tasked to Israel before they [Israel) sinned in the wilderness.

Leviticus 10:10-11
You are to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean. [11] You are to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which YaH.. [יהוה] has spoken to them by Moses.

Revelation 20:6
This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years.

According to Acts 10:34-48, The Most High is not respecter of persons. Strangers have always been able to join with Israel as individuals.

Exodus 12:48-49
And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to YaH.. [יהוה], let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.

Leviticus 19:33-35
And if a stranger [individuals not nations] sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am YaH.. [יהוה] your Aluhiym.

Exodus 12:38
A mixed multitude went up also with them, with flocks, herds, and even very much livestock. (Emphasis added: Multitude was still considered all Israel.)

>When is the time for the nations?

Luke 21:20-28
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is at hand. [21] Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let those who are in the middle of her depart. Let those who are in the country not enter therein. [22] For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. [23] Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse infants in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath to this people. [24] They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. [25] There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth anxiety of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the waves; [26] men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. [27] Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] But when these things begin to happen, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near.”

Zechariah 14:1-3
Behold, a day of YaH.. [יהוה] comes, when your plunder will be divided within you. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city will be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city will go out into captivity, and the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. Then YaH.. [יהוה] will go out and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

After the war with the nations:

Revelation 12:5
She gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. Her child was caught up to Aluhiym, and to his throne.

Revelation 19:15
Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the wine press of the fierceness of the wrath of Aluhiym, the Almighty.

Zechariah 14:16-19
[16] It will happen that everyone who is left of all the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, YaH.. [יהוה] of Armies, and to keep the feast of tents. [17] It will be, that whoever of all the families of the earth doesn’t go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, YaH.. [יהוה] of Armies, on them there will be no rain. [18] If the family of Egypt doesn’t go up, and doesn’t come, neither will it rain on them. This will be the plague with which Yahweh will strike the nations that don’t go up to keep the feast of tents. [19] This will be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations that don’t go up to keep the feast of tents.

Revelation 22:1-3
He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of Aluhiym and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. There will be no curse any more. The throne of Aluhiym and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants serve him

Lastly, John 3:16 is an accurate statement if viewed in its proper order.

1 Corinthians 15:20-26
But now The Messiah has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep. [21] For since death came by man, the resurrection of the dead also came by man. [22] For as in Adam all die, so also in The Messiah all will be made alive. [23] But each in his own order: The Messiah the first fruits, then those who are The Messiah’s, at his coming. [24] Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to Aluhiym, even the Father; when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power. [25] For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. [26] The last enemy that will be abolished is death.
