Who Is The Suffering Servant In Isaiah 53?

On May 21, 2014, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Isaiah 42 through 53 is a collection of verses commonly referred to as the "Four Songs of the Suffering Servant" and tells the story of a "Man of Sorrows" or "Alahiym's Suffering Servant".

The first song is Isaiah 42:1-4
The second song is Isaiah 49:1-6
The third song is Isaiah 50:4-9
The fourth song is Isaiah 52:13-53:12

The main focus is on the fourth song from Isaiah 53. Here is some background information before we begin this analysis. The word servant is used 23 times in the book of Isaiah. 19 in chapters 41 to 53. Israel/Jacob is called the servant at least 11 times: the first 2 in chapter 41. Servant is used 4 times in the previous 40 chapters referring to Isaiah, Eliakim, servants in general, and David. Because of this, Jewish interpretation states that Isaiah 53 is referring to Israel but is this true?

Here is a simple technique that can be used for discernment. This technique called the "Plug-In" will determine whether or not Isaiah 53 is talking about Israel. Every place in context where the word "He" appears we will replace it with "Israel" to see if it makes sense.

Isaiah 53
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of YaHUH revealed?

[2] For (Israel) shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: (Israel) hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see (Israel), there is no beauty that we should desire (Israel).

[3] (Israel) is despised and rejected of men; a man (?) of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from (Israel); he (Israel) was despised, and we esteemed (Israel) not.

[4] Surely (Israel) hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem (Israel) stricken, smitten of Alahiym, and afflicted.

[5] But (Israel) was wounded for our transgressions, (Israel) was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon (Israel); and with (Israel) stripes we are healed.

[6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and YaHUH hath laid on (Israel) the iniquity of us all.

[7] (Israel) was oppressed, and (Israel) was afflicted, yet (Israel) opened not his mouth: (Israel) is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so (Israel) opened not his mouth.

[8] (Israel) was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for (Israel) was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was (Israel) stricken.

[9] And (Israel) made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because (Israel) had done no violence, neither was any deceit in (Israel) mouth.

[10] Yet it pleased YaHUH to bruise (Israel); he hath put (Israel) to grief: when thou shalt make (Israel) life an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of YaHUH shall prosper in (Israel) hand.

[11] He shall see of the travail of (Israel) life, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for (Israel) shall bear their iniquities.

[12] Therefore will I divide (Israel) a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he (Israel) hath poured out his life unto death: and (Israel) was numbered with the transgressors; and (Israel) bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

By replacing "He" with "Israel", we can clearly see that this passage cannot be referring to Israel. Could this passage be talking about David? Absolutely not! David would have to be resurrected first before this could happen. Could this be Isaiah himself? Absolutely not!

Who Is YAH of Host?

On May 13, 2014, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Isaiah 44:6
Thus saith YAHUH the King of Israel, and his (Israel) redeemer YAHUH of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no Alahiym.

Isaiah 54:5
For your Maker is your husband, YAHUH of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the Alahiym of the whole earth.

Jeremiah 50:34
Their Redeemer is strong; YAHUH of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

Luke 1:67-69
And his father Zacharias was filled with Set-Apart Spirit, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be YAHUH Alahiym of Israel (Yashara’al); for he has visited and redeemed his people, And has raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

Galatians 3:13
Messiah has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangs on a tree:

Galatians 4:5
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Titus 2:14
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Jeremiah 33:15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the BRANCH of righteousness to grow up to David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. [16] In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell in safety: and this which he shall be called to her, YaHUH our righteousness.

Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith YAHUH, that I will raise to David a righteous BRANCH, and HE SHALL REIGN KING and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice upon the earth. [6] In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell in safety: and this [is] his name by which he shall be called, YaHUH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Now look at Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith YaHUH the King of Israel, and his redeemer YaHUH of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no Alahiym.

YaHUH king of Israel and The Branch shall reign as King (Yah of Host). They are one in the same or they are separate. If they are separate, then two kings will sit on the throne beyond David, and this would not be accurate.

All The Same

YaHUH King of Israel
YaHUH of Host
The Branch
YaHUH Our Righteousness
The Messiah

You Shall Have What You Say

On May 5, 2014, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Mark 11:22-24
[22] And Yahusha answering saith to them, Have faith in Alahiym.

[23] For verily I say to you, That whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he says.

[24]Therefore I say to you, What things soever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them.

Deuteronomy 30:11-14
[11] For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from you, neither is it far off.

[12] It is not in heaven, that thou should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

[13] Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

[14] But the word is very near to you, in your mouth, and in your heart, that you may do it.

Joshua 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make your way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
[4] Hear, O Israel: YaHUH our Alahiym is one YaHUH:

[5] And thou shalt love YaHUH your Alahiym with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

[6] And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart:

[7] And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

[8] And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

[9] And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

3 Days & 3 Nights

On May 2, 2014, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Matthew 12:38-40

"Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, 'Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.' But he answered and said to them, 'An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was THREE DAYS and THREE NIGHTS in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth".

The Messiah continuously said that he would rise the third day:

Matthew 16:21 From that time Yahusha began to show to His disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

Matthew 17:23 and they will kill Him, and the third day he will be raised up.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

Matthew 20:19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day he will rise again.”

Matthew 27:64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘he has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”

Mark 9:31 For he taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after he is killed, he will rise the third day.”

Mark 10:34 and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day he will rise again.”

Luke 9:22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”

Luke 13:32 And he said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’

Luke 18:33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day he will rise again.”

Luke 24:7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."

Luke 24:21 But we were hoping that it was he who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

Luke 24:46 Then he said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

Daniel 9:26-27
“ And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.

Can you count to three?
Wednesday Night = 1 Night
Thursday Day = 1 Day

Thursday night = 2 Nights
Friday Day = 2 Days

Friday Night = 3 Nights
Saturday Day = 3 Days
