Can We Keep Feast Days Today?

On March 28, 2014, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Some people state that we cannot keep Passover and the other Feast Days because we are outside of the land.

Let the Scriptures speak! Listen to the Book!

The very first Passover was kept in captivity outside of the land in Exodus 12.

Passover kept in the wilderness

According to Numbers 9:1-5 “And YHUH spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, [2] Let the children of Israel also keep the Passover at his appointed season. [3] In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it. [4] And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the Passover. [5] And they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that YaHUH commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.

Joshua 5:10-11 “And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. [11] And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day. [12] And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna anymore; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Passover in captivity

Ezra 6:19-22 And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month. [20] For the priests and the Levites were purified together, all of them were pure, and killed the passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. [21] And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek YHUH Alahiym of Israel, did eat, [22] And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for YHUH had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of Alahiym, the Alahiym of Israel.

Passover in the land

Deuteronomy 16:1
Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto YaHUH thy Alahiym: for in the month of Abib YaHUH thy Alahiym brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.

[2] Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the passover unto YaHUH thy Alahiym, of the flock and the herd, in the place which YaHUH shall choose to place his name there.

[3] Thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith, even the bread of affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.

[4] And there shall be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning.

[5] Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates, which YaHUH thy Alahiym giveth thee:

[6] But at the place which YaHUH thy Alahiym shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.

[7] And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which YaHUH thy Alahiym shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents.

Finally, Deuteronomy 30

And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither YaHUH thy Alahiym hath driven thee, (Even Passover among the nations where Israel is scattered)

[2] And shalt return unto YaHUH thy Alahiym, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;

[3] That then YaHUH thy Alahiym will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither YaHUH thy Alahiym hath scattered thee.

[4] If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will YaHUH thy Alahiym gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:

[5] And YaHUH thy Alahiym will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.

Lastly, Quite a few people are saying that we cannot keep the feast days because we are not in the land. I answer this with Ezra 6:18-19 and Tobit chapter 1 & 2. Tobit kept the feast of weeks (Penetecost/Shavuots) while in captivity in the city of Nineveh.

Tobit 2:1-2
When I returned home I was reunited with my wife Anna and my son Tobias. At the Harvest Festival, which is also called the Festival of Weeks, I sat down to a delicious meal. [2] When I saw how much food there was on the table, I said to Tobias,

Son, go out and find one of our people who is living in poverty here in exile, someone who takes Alahiym's commands seriously. Bring him back with you, so that he can share this festival meal with us. I won't start eating until you come back.

Extra Stuff

Exodus 25:8 "And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them."

Ezekiel 11:16 "Therefore say, Thus saith YaHUH Alahiym; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come."
