Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement

On August 6, 2013, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

In Leviticus 23:2, The word “feasts” should not be interpreted as a time to eat food. The word 'feasts" is a Hebrew word meaning Mo'ad (Strong's Concordance Number H4150). This word carries the English meaning of "Appointed Time".

What about The Day of Atonement?

Leviticus 23:26-32

26 And יהוה spake unto Moses, saying,

27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy (set-apart) convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict (H6031) your souls (H5315), and offer an offering made by fire unto יהוה. (We have to afflict our souls on the 10th day of the 7th Month)

28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before יהוה your Alahiym.

29 For whatsoever soul (H5315) it be that shall not be afflicted (H3061) in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

30 And whatsoever soul (H5315) it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict (H6031) your souls (H5315): in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath. (We have to also afflict our souls on the 9th day of the 7th Month starting at sunset)

How Do we afflict our soul? Strong's Concordance H6031 is the Hebrew Word 'Anah' meaning afflict

h6031

Psalm 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I HUMBLED (H6031: same word as AFFLICT) my soul WITH FASTING; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

Isaiah 58:3 Wherefore have we FASTED, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted (H6031) our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours

"Soul" (H5315) can have the following meanings

h5315

Psalms 107:9 For he satisfies the longing soul (H5315) , and fills the hungry soul(H5315) with goodness

Proverbs 23:2-3 And put a knife to your throat, if you be a man given to appetite (H5315)

Proverbs 27:7 The full soul (H5315) loathes a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul (H5315) every bitter thing is sweet.

"To afflict your soul" can be translated as "to afflict your appetite"

What should we do whena fasting?

In Esther 4:16, a fast means to stop from eating or drinking.

Prayer and Repentance, see Esther 9:31; Nehemiah 1:14; Isaiah 58

Joel 2:12-14 "Therefore also now, says יהוה, turn you even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: 13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto יהוה your Alahiym: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repents him of the evil. 14 Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto יהוה your Alahiym?"

While many feast days are called a "Shabbatun" (rest), The Day of Atonement is called a Shabbat-Shabbatun.

The Day of Atonement carries the same designation as the 7th Day Sabbath. The Strong's Concordance number for 7th Day Sabbath is (H7676 & H7677) which means a Sabbath of Complete Rest (NO WORK OF ANY KIND). The same (SABBATH Of COMPLETE REST) applies to The Day of Atonement (H7676 & H7677). Compare Leviticus 23:3 to Leviticus 23:32. Whatever you WOULD NOT DO on the 7th Day Sabbath also applies to "The Day of Atonement".

For 'The Day of Atonement', do we have to fast for 24 hours or 48 hours?

The answer to this question is based upon the starting of a day. Some say that the day starts at sunset and others say that the day starts at sunrise. Let's explore each in relationship to "The Day of Atonement" in order to find the answer.

There are two (2) days associated with 'The Day of Atonement'; the 9th and the 10th day of the 7th month.

Leviticus 23:26 & 32 (King James Version)
The Day of Atonement

26 And YAH spake unto Moses, saying, 27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy (set-apart) convocation (gathering) unto you; and ye shall AFFLICT (H6031) your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto YHUH.

32 It shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath

The Day of Atonement is actually on the 10th day of the 7th month . Israel had to afflict (fast) their souls starting the 9th day at even until the even of the 10th day.

If we use the sunset to sunset scenario to observe The Day of Atonement starting at sunset on the 10th day and end the Day of Atonement at the following sunset, then what happens to afflicting our souls on the 9th day?

If we use the sunset to sunset scenario to observe The Day of Atonement starting at sunset on the 9th day and end the Day of Atonement at the following sunset, then what happens to afflicting our souls on the 10th day?

The only option in keeping a Sunset to Sunset Day of Atonement to be inclusive of both the 9th day and the 10th day would be a 48 hour Day of Atonement.

However, if we recognize that a day begins at sunrise and ends at sunset (evening), then the Day of Atonement would be a 24 hour period starting the evening of the 9th and ending the evening of the 10th day. PERFECT!
