Atonement (Yom Kippur)

On September 27, 2011, in Bible Lessons, by Milton Carnes

Leviticus (Uyaqara) 23:32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall you celebrate your sabbath.

Our sins have separated us from The Most High. Therefore, our sins must be atoned for in order to reconcile us back to YAH.

Isaiah 59

[1] Behold, YAH's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

[2] But your iniquities (lawlessness) have separated between you and your elohim, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

1 John 3:4
Sin is transgression of the law.

Daniel 9:11
Amplified Bible (AMP)

Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, even turning aside that they might not obey Your voice. Therefore the curse has been poured out on us and the oath that is written in the Law of Moses the servant of Elohim, because we have sinned against Him.

Exodus 32:30-34 (First Atonement Done By Moses)
Amplified Bible (AMP)

[30] The next day Moses said to the people, You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to YAH; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.

[31] So Moses returned to YAH, and said, Oh, these people have sinned a great sin and have made themselves gods of gold!

[32] Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--and if not, blot me, I pray You, out of Your book which You have written!

[33] But YAH said to Moses, Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him [not you] out of My book.

[34] But now go, lead the people to the place of which I have told you. Behold, My [a]Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I punish I will visit their sin upon them!

Atonement Definition

Root Word

Leviticus 23

[26] And YAH spake unto Moses, saying,

[27] Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto YAH.

[28] And you shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before YAH your Elohim.

[29] For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

[30] And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

[31] you shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Definition of Fast:

Psalms 35:13 ... I humbled (KJV) ("same word as afflict or afflicted") my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

To "afflict the soul" means to fast

Esther 4:16
Amplified Bible (AMP)

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast for me; and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I also and my maids will fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.

Isaiah 58
Fasting that Pleases YAH

[1] Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

[2] Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their Elohim: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to Elohim.

[3] Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and you see not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

[4] Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: you shall not fast as you do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

[5] Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to YAH?

[6] Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? The purpose for fasting because of sin!

[7] Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

[8] Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of YAH shall be thy reward.

[9] Then shalt thou call, and YAH shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

[10] And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

[11] And YAH shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

[12] And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

[13] If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath (7th Day Sabbath & The Day of Atonement), from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of YAH, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

[14] Then shalt you delight thyself in YAH; and I will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob your father: for the mouth of YAH has spoken it

Fasting and repentance

Joel 2:12-14
Amplified Bible (AMP)

[12] Therefore also now, says YAH, turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored].

[13] Rend your hearts and not your garments and return to YAH, your Elohim, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in loving-kindness; and He revokes His sentence of evil [when His conditions are met].

[14] Who knows but what He will turn, revoke your sentence [of evil], and leave a blessing behind Him [giving you the means with which to serve Him], even a cereal or meal offering and a drink offering for YAH, your Elohim?

Atonement for sin by the High Priest for The Children of Israel

How does The Messiah fit into atonement?

Luke 1
King James Version (KJV)

[63] And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is Yahuchanan (John). And they marvelled all.

[64] And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised YAH.

[65] And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

[66] And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of YAH was with him.

[67] And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

[68} Blessed be YAH Elohim of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

[69] And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

[70] As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

Hebrews 10:5
Amplified Bible (AMP)

Hence, when He [The Messiah] entered into the world, He said, Sacrifices and offerings You have not desired, but instead You have made ready a body for Me [to offer];

John 1:29
King James Version (KJV)

The next day Yahuchanan (John) sees Yahushua coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of YAH, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Matthew 26:28
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Luke 24:47
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yahushua The Messiah for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:43
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Romans 3:25
Amplified Bible (AMP)

Whom YAH put forward [before the eyes of all] as a mercy seat and propitiation (something that propitiates: to gain or regain the favor or goodwill of : appease ; specifically : an atoning sacrifice) by His blood [the cleansing and life-giving sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation, to be received] through faith. This was to show YAH's righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over and ignored former sins without punishment.

Hebrews 9:22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Notice this ....

John 7:49
King James Version (KJV)

But this people who knows not the law are cursed.

Galatians 3:13
King James Version (KJV)

The Messiah has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Same verse as above but from the Amplified Bible
Galatians 3:13
Amplified Bible (AMP)

The Messiah purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the curse of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself; his blood] becoming a curse for us, for it is written [in the Scriptures], Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified);

Colossians 2
[13] And you who were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (your sensuality, your sinful carnal nature), [YAH] brought to life together with [The Messiah], having [freely] forgiven us all our transgressions,

[14] Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away the handwriting of the note (bond: sin and the wages of sin which is death) with its legal decrees and demands which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us). This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing it to [His] cross.

15[YAH] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross or stake].

Daniel 9:26-27
King James Version (KJV)

[26] And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

[27] And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate

Now you can read Hebrews 8 and 9 and 10 in its entirety as well as Leviticus 25 in its entirety.

The Messiah came to redeem us from the curse of the law (death) by the shedding of his blood on the stake.
